Your swimming pool can be likened to a human being. It has an important circulatory system, like the human body, keeping the water in it healthy and fresh. And just like a human being, your swimming pool also has a heart: the pool pump. The swimming pool pump keeps the water flowing nicely, so it can go through the entire filtering system and ensure that the water is clean and uncontaminated. After all, stagnant water is unsafe and unpleasant. If your water looks unclean suddenly, it could be a sign that the pool pump you have installed is having a problem. Being able to spot problems early on is crucial in pool maintenance.
In this article, we list other signs that indicate a need for either pool pump repair or pool pump replacement. We also got some great tips to check for these telltale signs without opening or disassembling your filtration system.
4 Signs That You Need Pool Pump Replacement Soon
If you experience any of these signs, contact Cherry right away.
1. There is a strange noise.
Pool pumps run quietly. No one wants to hear grinding gears or other loud noises when in the pool trying to relax and take a breather. Imagine how uncomfortable it would be to jump into a pool and hear an obnoxious mechanical noise. No one wants that.
Your pool pump shouldn’t be making any loud noises. Weird noises should tell you early on that something is wrong with your pump and may need urgent repair or pool pump replacement. For example, screeching and grinding noises typically translate to bad gears or bearings due primarily to rust.
It might not be safe to get into the pool at this point. So, to ensure your household’s safety, get in touch with your trusted pool specialist.
2. Your pool pump is old.
Remember when we said that the swimming pool, in many ways, is like a human being? Well, age plays a large part in pool maintenance. The age of your heart, or in this case, your pump, is an early sign of trouble. However, this doesn’t mean your pump isn’t working properly just because it’s old. If your pump is older than most cars you see driving around the neighborhood though, it should be prudent to check on it to be safe.
The components of your pool system won’t last forever, which is why its age is an issue. They wear down over time, and bits and pieces may need replacing over the years. The assembly and components in your filtration system typically last for around 10 to 15 years. If your pump has reached the end of that, it’s likely that your pool is no longer functioning as well as it did when it was spanking new.
3. Weak suction or total loss of suction
Your pool pumps are designed in such a way that it draws water in and runs it through the filtration system before it pumps it back out to the pool, clear of any debris or other stuff you don’t want in your pool. If your pumps aren’t drawing water in efficiently and effectively, your pool will suffer.
Check for suction on the pressure gauge of your filter. If the indicator reads 10 PSI or above the normal pressure, then it should be time to wash your filters. However, if the indicator reads lower than the normal pressure, it may no longer be the filter. First off, check if there are any leaks in the pool plumbing. Even a minuscule leak can cause catastrophic problems for your pool. If there aren’t any leaks, you may have a clogged pump, or the motor that sucks the water in may have been worn out.
4. The pump works on and off.
Does your pump shut down frequently after only a short time? Then it could mean that it is either overheated or clogged. The motor should be running smoothly when your pump is working effectively.
If your pump is not doing what it is supposed to, it tells you that something is broken and needs repair. For example, the fans in your pump could be working overtime, causing it to age faster than it should. This problem must be checked on and dealt with as soon as you notice it.
